Workshop Descriptions

Teaching Skills Workshop (Approximately 18 hours)
The Teaching Skills Workshop is based on “microteaching,” a longstanding approach to practicing teaching. Participants are asked to learn and demonstrate certain basic elements of presenting a lesson. Short lessons are presented to other members of a small group of participants and the lesson is video-recorded. The presenter receives feedback from the participants and he or she views the recording at a later time. Discussion of selected teaching principles is interspersed throughout the workshop.
Teaching Demonstration (Approximately 8 hours)
Giving a “teaching demonstration” moves the student from theory to practice. Participants apply the techniques learned in the previous workshop in their real-world classroom by designing lessons, which they present in an actual class (as opposed to the laboratory setting of the Teaching Skills Workshop). The workshop facilitator will observe these teaching demonstrations. Participants in the class are taught the skills of classroom observation and additional techniques for providing feedback. A peer observes a second lesson and participants complete a post-demonstration conference. The workshop and the process of feedback promote a mentor-mentee relationship between the facilitator and the participants.
Teaching in the Community College (Approximately 15 hours)
This workshop will expose participants to a variety of teaching techniques and issues unique to the two-year comprehensive public college. The workshop is designed to prompt participants to consider alternative ways of teaching and to prepare themselves for common community college teaching challenges. Typical topics include the following: active learning; clear communication between teacher and student; motivation; and preparing an effective syllabus. The workshop relies greatly on active learning techniques.
TSW + TD + TICC = 41 hours
