[CREATE BICSI Workshop, summer 2005]

I thought the workshop was intense, hands-on, and highly technical. I have never seen an instructor who could produce an in-class example for everything that we were seeing in the slides on the overhead. The hands-on labs reinforced the material and the teamwork amongst the workshop participants was fantastic. Chris's preparation for the workshop was incredible.

I am always looking for ways to enforce the fundamental concepts of programming for my beginning students. The Lego Robotics Workshop gave me a tool that was readily accessible to my high school students. The RoboLab Software provides a programming interface which is more intuitive for my visually oriented students than the Visual Basic interface we use for most of our work. This will help supplement problem solving skills as well as reinforce the basic structures of programming: sequences, decision trees and loops. Thanks for a great tool.

I teach 9th Grade Physical Science at Newbury Park High School and I found the Robotics Course to be a potentially valuable addition to my hands-on laboratory repertoire. Although the initial financial outlay is moderately large (and will probably be deferred for at least a little while considering the current budget climate) I am in the midst of incorporating the material into a full- fledged unit on iterative learning techniques in science. I recognize the value of the use of robotics to engage the students with both computers and Legos ("we get to use Legos, Mr. Svoboda?").

My first thoughts after completing the Teaching Skills Workshop Facilitator training, provided by the CREATE program, was that the training would be helpful to seasoned teachers, not just beginners. The first day I gave the workshop I heard one of the adjunct faculty say, “Finally! Some help!” He told us that he was thrown into the classroom without any training and he was often frustrated because he didn’t know how to help students who weren't performing well. All of the teachers we trained felt that they got a lot out of the classes.

Working as an intern for the Computer Networking Dept. was an educational as well as enjoyable experience. It definitely helped me develop my IT as well as networking skills. Given a real working environment also gave me an idea on what to expect and look forward to after I graduate from college. I truly appreciate my mentors, Pam Coon, Jobir Andkhoy, and Lee Hilliard for all their support and the extended knowledge they passed on to me. I am also grateful for the CREATE program which helped me to obtain my internship.

The instructor training offered for the CREATE program offer experienced instructors an opportunity to share best practices. Teaching methodologies presented in the CREATE instructor program have helped my students learn the subject material and improve retention.

“ITT Systems Division has hired over ten graduates and currently has numerous employees attending Allan Hancock College’s electronics technician-training programs. The establishment of this program has greatly benefited my company’s efforts for hiring trained, skilled technicians and entry-level engineers with high-tech job skills required to be successful ion the aerospace industry. The coordination with industry and the college program provides a first hand knowledge of curriculum requirements needed form my engineers who desire to return to school for professional career improvement training and for our technicians who want to obtain a two year technical degree.”

The Teaching Skills workshop was full of information that any teacher can benefit from. I learned skills on classroom-time management, and effective teaching that I am already applying in my classes. These skills have enhanced my teaching,

The Cisco Security training program and Security+ courses are top-notch! Outstanding teachers, the latest courseware, and access to state-of-the-art equipment make for a powerful learning experience. I go to class, and apply what I learned at work the very next day. I’ve attended $3000 private courses that were less than half as useful! The Santa Barbara City College classes make IT security education available to everyone – This is the future of higher education.

Leslie Crandell, Computer Network Engineering Student

The Santa Barbara City College networking curriculum has allowed me to sharpen my networking skills in a modern network environment. The lab equipment is equivalent to what is found in the modern workplace and the instructors have excellent understanding of the material. I am able to study routing, switching, and network security, and then apply this knowledge at work. The state of the art lab equipment, combined with the hands-on nature of the curriculum puts the Santa Barbara City College’s Computer Networking program on the cutting edge, providing a superior learning environment than that available in mane private institutions costing thousands of dollars.

The CREATE program has allowed me to be able to work toward my degree in Information Technology/ Industrial Technology by bringing a technical degree local, where there was none previously (Ventura County). It has been a challenging, yet rewarding experience. I look forward to graduating with a degree in Industrial Technology with an emphasis in Computer Networking Management. When I finish, this program will make me a well-rounded individual.

Christian Burkhardt

A degree in Industrial Technology will give me the opportunity to certify over 25 years of experience in construction and manufacturing. The extension program through Fresno State is the only avenue available allowing me to work and study concurrently.

Jeff Hall

This program affords a great opportunity to further my education in a technology field. The program brings the school to many who are unable to go to school in a conventional program.

Jason Young

The CSU Fresno Industrial Technology program is providing me with the knowledge to achieve my career goals. The program creates a foundation that will allow me to become a manager in a variety of industry sectors.

McKenzie Wiseman

Fresno State IT program through CREATE offers a fantastic opportunity for working adults to complete a technical Bachelor’s Degree at night. The instructors really care about their students!

Steve Blanchard

Greatly appreciated! I am able to continue my education locally.

Lee Hilliard
